Synopsis

Amidst the ongoing discourse surrounding the judicial shortage and its profound impact on access to justice, it's crucial to consider the individual contributions that each of us can make in addressing this pressing issue. Have you ever paused to contemplate your potential role in this endeavor? Have those thoughts included the possibility of becoming a judge, but you find yourself unsure whether you're ready or capable? Is it the right move for you?

Please join us for a candid conversation featuring Justice Jennifer Whately, Justice Anita Chan and Justice Jacqueline Hughes, three of the most recent female judges to be appointed to the Supreme Court of British Columbia in Vancouver. Eileen Patel of Patel Advocacy will moderate the conversation.

At this event, delve into the personal journeys of our esteemed panelists, exploring how they gained the confidence to embrace a judicial role and transition from lawyers to judges. Focusing on their experiences, insights and pivotal moments, our panelists discuss what led them to take that significant next step in their careers. Topics will include:

  • Overcoming challenges and building confidence on the path to becoming a judge
  • Key experiences and milestones that shaped their readiness for judicial roles
  • Lessons learned from their transition from legal practice to the judiciary
  • Balancing life on the bench with parenthood/family
  • The application and appointment process

If you have specific questions or issues that you would like to see discussed, please feel free to email our Education Committee Co-Chair, Laésha J. Smith, at lsmith@peslitigation.com.

For those attending in person, please join us for some light appetizers and mingling starting at 5:00pm. For those attending remotely, please join us for online networking at 5:00pm, or join for the presentation portion of our event starting at 5:30pm.
