Synopsis
Join us for a lively, informative and interactive session led by John-Paul Boyd focusing on the fascinating results coming out of the Alberta Limited Legal Services Project.
The Alberta Limited Legal Services Project was formed to assess the impact of unbundling on lawyers and clients, their satisfaction with providing and receiving unbundled legal services, and the impact of unbundled services on clients’ ability to access justice. The project assembled a roster of 60 lawyers from across Alberta, practicing in almost every area of law, and collected feedback from lawyers and clients over a 14-month period. The results of the data suggest that: both lawyers and clients are highly satisfied with unbundled legal services; the roster served lower- and middle-income Albertans, as well as Albertans living in rural areas of the province; public demand for unbundling is strong, with the highest areas of demand in family law, wills and estates and civil litigation; and, clients feel that receiving unbundled services improves their avidity to understand and resolve their legal problem.
John-Paul Boyd, a family law arbitrator and mediator, and the former executive director of the Canadian Research Institute for Law and the Family will present the results from this project in more detail, as well as the Institute’s recommendations about the delivery of unbundled legal services in the future. The study, “Client and Lawyer Satisfaction with Unbundled Legal Services," is available for download from the University of Calgary Library at https://prism.ucalgary.ca/handle/1880/107197.
