In recent years, Canadian society has become increasingly tolerant around issues of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression, and the law has tried to keep pace with evolving social mores. However, issues concerning personal privacy and new risks to personal information have emerged as a result of the digital and social media revolutions.
The OBA's Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Committee (SOGIC) has convened a panel of experts to discuss legal and policy issues regarding the management of personal privacy and reputational risk, particularly in the context of employment and professional career development. Panelists will address topics such as information technology and privacy, defamation, the new tort of intrusion upon seclusion, the Canadian Judicial Council inquiry involving allegations of sexual misconduct by Associate Chief Justice of Manitoba Lori Douglas, and the use by the federal Minister of Citizenship and Immigration of personal contact information provided in a petition to send a targeted email to LGBT Canadians.
