OBA Citizenhip and Immigration LAW PROGRAM | 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM
The current legal aid system within Ontario, and across Canada, has been seen for several years as a “crisis” impacting many groups in dire need of public funding for proper legal representation, including refugee claimants. A recent announcement by LAO, that funding for refugee claimants will continue for one further year, while encouraging, does not provide any long-term commitment. Whether you are a lawyer who represents clients on LAO or not, the issue is pervasive enough to impact the entire justice system, and must be taken seriously.
Join us for an important and robust discussion regarding the impacts of funding cuts on immigration and refugee law determination systems in other jurisdictions, and what they could mean for Ontario. As well, we will discuss potential solutions to the access to justice crisis, and how we, members of the Ontario Immigration Bar, can work together with LAO, government and all stakeholders in reaching a viable solution.
