We are in the midst of the largest inter-generational transfers of wealth in history, with Canadian Baby Boomers set to inherit three-quarters of a billion dollars from the generations above them. It is expected that Gen-X and Millennials will in the future receive one billion dollars from the Boomers. Much of this wealth is in the form of residential real estate.
As we go through this generational shift it is not uncommon to receive a phone call like the following: an adult child of a senior calls your law firm to make an appointment for their parent so that their parent can sign some sort of document giving the caller (and not their sibling) the ability to deal with their parent’s financial and personal affairs. A key response to these calls is to ask ourselves: who is my client?
Join us for this Zoom meeting where we discuss the legal, ethical, social and business considerations in advising elder clients. We will examine our obligations under the Code of Conduct and discuss issues such as capacity, undue influence and duress. We will discuss best practices re: how we serve elder clients.
