Speakers: Billie Fortier, MLT Aikins LLP

Billie advises First Nations and Métis communities on matters related to economic development, commercial leasing, industry partnerships and community governance. Billie is a member of the Fort McKay Métis Nation and a member of the Indigenous Bar Association.

Topic: An Aboriginal Law Practitioners' Guide to Legal Research – The things you need to know and the places you need to look to serve First Nations and Métis communities.

Billie Fortier will review practical sources for researching primary and secondary sources relevant to aboriginal law. Some areas she will touch on:

  • A brief comparison of Aboriginal Law and Indigenous Law;
  • Where to find laws enacted by First Nations and Metis communities;
  • Where to find Band Council Resolutions; and
  • Who to contact when you need information from on-reserve members.
