Synopsis

You are invited to attend a special evening hosted by the Children's Law section, featuring Dr. Jennifer Charlesworth, BC’s Representative for Children and Youth as our keynote speaker.

We will also be joined by Carly Hyman, the Chief Investigator of the Critical Injury and Death team at the Office of the Representative for Children and Youth, who will be sharing news of a special project focused on independent legal representation for children and youth in British Columbia as well as a young person who will be speaking about her direct experience with the justice system and the importance of legal representation for her.

The Office of the Representative for Children and Youth’s project will result in a Special Report to the B.C. Legislature.  The objectives of the project are, among other things, to research the need for independent legal representation for children and youth specifically in the areas of family law, child protection, and involuntary detentions under the Mental Health Act, to discuss possible models of independent legal representation for children and youth, including possible roles of counsel, and to make a strong, public case for systemic reform.

Guests will have an opportunity to discuss this initiative and provide comments and feedback.

Appetizers and refreshments will be served.
