PROGRAM - FEBRUARY 28

11:00am - 11:30am | Registration/Check-In

11:30am - 12:00pm | Lunch & Welcome/Introductory Remarks

12:00pm - 1:00pm  |  Flexible Law Firm Staffing
Christie Gilmour, Forte Law
The concept of work has changed, and with it the way law firms are staffed. Lawyers, paralegals, legal assistants and other admin staff are working as contractors or as employees paid hourly, salaried, fee splits and/or commissions. Work is still happening in traditional law firm offices, but remote working has gained significantly in popularity. In this session we will review a wide variety of working and compensation models, together with some of the employment law issues that arise.  We will cover best practices and tips for what should be covered in contracts and policies when engaging lawyers and law firm staff.

1:00pm - 2:00pm  |  The Upside of Stress
Bena Stock, B.A., LL.B., M.C. Registered Clinical Counsellor, R.C.C. – Associate Director, LAP
Stress is portrayed in a negative light in the news, in health forums, and in the workplace. There is little doubt that most lawyers experience stress on a regular basis. The new science of stress shows that stress can be a good thing, if you know how to use it. The best way to manage stress isn’t to reduce or avoid it, but rather to rethink, and even embrace it. The goal of this workshop is to help you get better at stress.

2:00pm - 3:00pm |  How to Avoid the Twin Dragons: The Anxiety of Law Society Complaints & Insurance Claims
Martin Finch QC
, Bencher, Baker Newby LLP
This presentation will explore the background to complaints to the Law Society, areas of frequent complains and the response of the Law Society to complaints. It will explain the best methods for avoiding complaints and provide insight to the complaint process. It addresses both the complaints process and the Lawyers’ Insurance Fund process.

3:15pm - 4:15pm   |  Managing Risky Clients
Thomas Spraggs, Spraggs Law
Join us for a presentation from Tom Spraggs, an injury and litigation lawyer in Coquitlam, on the important topic of Managing Risky Clients. The balance between advocating on your clients behalf while also protecting the interests of your practice in today’s evolving legal services industry has become more difficult to achieve.

Subtopics will include scope of services, setting boundaries, tips for breaking bad news and strategies to scale successful relationships.

4:15pm - 4:45pm   |  Practitioners Roundtable - Practice in the Tri-Cities, Fraser Valley, and Beyond
