FAMILY LAW SECTION
NOTICE OF MEETING

DATE: Wednesday, February 27, 2019
TIME:  12:00 Noon – 1:30pm
LOCATION: Law Society of Manitoba Classroom, 200 – 260 St. Mary Avenue, Winnipeg
TOPIC: Question & Answer Roundtable with Triage Judges and Family Conciliation

Come get your practical questions answered about navigating the new case flow system by the Triage Judges and Family Conciliation. This is not a presentation by the Judges or Family Concilation. It is an opportunity for a free flow discussion and question and answer dialogue over lunch.

The Honourable Justice Dunlop, Justice Dueck and Justice Thatcher, and David Berry Supervisor at Family Conciliation will be in attendance to answer any questions you have about the new system.

Some questions that have been raised by some members of the Bar so far, are:
•    what is a parenting plan supposed to look like, is there a precedent?
•    what are the expectations when a self rep is on the other side? Do I have to meet with them?
•    what do I do when my client needs an urgent Order for travel and the case has not been to triage? Or a passport authorization?
•    How is Family Conciliation going to assign assessments? What type of assessments are now being offered?
•    what do I do when the parties cannot agree on a private assessor, given the Master can only Order an assessment to Family Conciliation?
•    when an opposing counsel is trying to get an emergent hearing, and I as the lawyer on the other side do not agree that it is emergent, what do I file or do to oppose that?
•    what types of fact scenarios might be considered emergent?

Complimentary pizza will be served, therefore advance registration is required.

If you are unable to attend this meeting but have questions you would like addressed, please send them to the MBA by e-mail (sections@cba-mb.ca) in advance of February 27, 2019.

Please RSVP to the Manitoba Bar Association online.

Attendance at this MBA Section meeting can be applied towards your Law Society of Manitoba's Continuing Professional Development requirement for a maximum of 1.5 hours.
