Presented by the CBA's National Elder Law Section
As the Canadian population ages, and the use of medication to treat the elderly increases, it is critical that lawyers working with the elder client (whether in family, wills and estates, property, or health law) be aware of the impact of medication on capacity and know how to respond when a capacity issue is suspected.
Our expert panel will discuss: the spectrum of dementia conditions; medications common in older individuals and potential adverse effects; the use of pharmaceutical restraints; and pharmaceutical opinions versus medication reviews. Our panel will also highlight the difficulty of identifying your client in complex family situations, set out practical scenarios which may arise when identifying capacity issues, and review other conditions that often present as dementia. Emphasis will be placed upon professional responsibility and ethical considerations.
