Update on CSA OTC Derivatives Regulation

Presented by the CBA Alberta Securities Law South Section

On Demand. Originally presented on May 13, 2025.

Over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives act as a foundational layer in modern financial markets. Trading these derivatives is important for companies, financial institutions and governments to manage risks, enhance returns, optimize liquidity, and efficiently allocate capital. For Alberta’s and Canada’s energy producers and distributors, it is important to hedge oil, gas and electricity price risks, to protect consumers from severe price spikes and to stabilize operating budgets. The Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) has been working since the 2008 financial crisis to put in place appropriate regulation of these markets. Join CSA derivatives staff to learn more about existing and upcoming regulation of swaps, futures, and OTC derivatives..

SPEAKER

Janice Cherniak (Senior Legal Counsel, Market Regulation - Alberta Securities Commission)
