Supervised Access:  Why, What, How, and For How Long…

Presented by the CBA Alberta Child & Youth Law (South) Section

Julia Surerus-Walsh, owner of Worth Resolving Youth and Family Services, an agency that provides structured access and visitation services for families involved with Alberta Children's Services, with increasing levels of support designed to promote safety, improve parenting skill. Julia will discuss these services and their differences, such as the differences between Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 services.

Jane Gillespie, MSW, of Jane Gillespie Counselling & Consulting, will provide information on what lawyers should be looking for in a visit supervisor, what should be noted in reports, and alternatives such as Therapeutic Access.

The presentation will also address the important question of duration: when supervision should begin, how progress should be measured, and what factors support a transition to less restrictive parenting arrangements. Attendees will leave with a better understanding of the purposes and limitations of supervised parenting time, along with practical guidance for advising clients and working effectively with families involved in supervised access services.
