Presented by the CBA Alberta Family Law (South) Section
Connect with fellow Family Law (South) Section Subscribers and join us in congratulating our newest Executives, Melissa Abusow and Laurie Tymchuk. There will be an opportunity to share ideas for the 2026/2027 Section meetings, as well as time to connect, commiserate over practice struggles, and enjoy food and drinks together.
If you are unable to attend but would like to contribute a suggestion for future meetings, please email Sierra at yanush@bdlfamilylaw.com.
WELCOME NEW MEMBERS-AT-LARGE
Laurie Tymchuk
Laurie graduated from the University of Alberta Law in 2006 and Commerce in 2001. Laurie were called in 2007 and have practiced almost exclusively in family law. They are a partner at Richmond Tymchuk Family Law. They love to learn and are excited for the opportunity to give back to the family law community as an executive member of the Family (South) Section by facilitating ongoing learning opportunities!
Melissa Abusow
Melissa was called in 2022 and has practiced family law since about halfway through her articling year. She started her law career at Scott Venturo Rudakoff LLP (SVR) and currently works at BDL Family Law LLP as a Family Law Associate.
Melissa came to practice law later in life, she returned to school to complete her undergraduate degree in sociology at the University of Calgary when her youngest child was 3-years-old. From there she went straight into the U of C’s law program in the fall of 2018. The experience of completing back-to-back degrees while raising young children served as a training ground for managing competing priorities.
During her time at SVR, she was the associate liaison to Pro Bono Law Alberta and organized their associate volunteers for both the King’s Bench Court Assistance Program (Amicus) and Civil Claims Duty Counsel.
