Inns of Court - Red Deer

Inns of Court is a program of informal discussion and 'dining out' on topic of interest to early-career barristers and follows the English tradition of dining with senior practitioners and judges. The event will give attendees the opportunity it hear presentations from distinguished speakers on topics that are most important to those in the early years of practice, while also dining with members of the judiciary while having casual conversations, asking questions, and being regaled with stories from the bench.

Topic: Effective Lawyering: Problems, Procrastination, Planning, and Process

Effective lawyering is shaped by disciplined attention to process, planning, and timely execution. This session will explore how a thoughtful, rules-focused approach can enhance efficiency, reduce procrastination, and improve outcomes across all areas of practice. Drawing on practical experience, our panel of Justices will discuss how procedural rules can be used as tools rather than obstacles, how evolving procedural frameworks, including the new Family Focus Protocol, leave little room for delay, and how careful planning can prevent problems before they arise. The discussion will also examine best practices for proactive file management, navigating procedural complexity, and developing habits that promote clarity, preparation, and professionalism in daily practice.
