The Building Canada Act: Lessons, Signals, and the Year Ahead

It's been more than a year since the Carney government passed the Building Canada Act and nearly 10 months since Canada committed to declare the West Coast Oil Pipeline a project of national interest in the Canada-Alberta Memorandum of Understanding. The federal government's stated goal of determining whether to so designate the pipeline by October 1 is rapidly approaching. This decision will likely be the most significant Building Canada Act milestone of 2026 and a key indicator of how aggressively Ottawa intends to advance major energy infrastructure projects. Join Martin Ignasiak, Head of Bennett Jones' Energy Regulatory Group, along with Bennett Jones associate Jayce Eadie, as they discuss the implications of the October 1 deadline, assess the Act's performance to date, and explore its prospects for the year ahead.
