Reforming Private Sector Privacy Law in Canada: A Look at Bill C-36

Presented by the CBA Alberta Privacy & Access Law (North) Section

In June 2026, the federal government tabled Bill C-36, it’s latest attempt to reform private sector data protection law in Canada. While C-36 adopts many of the changes set out in its predecessor Bill C-27, there are some significant differences. These include (but are not limited to) an entirely new oversight regime, changes to approaches to de-identification and anonymization, modifications to data deletion, the right to an explanation of automated decision-making, cross-border data transfers and the legitimate interest exception to consent. This webinar will explore what is new and noteworthy in Bill C-36 and will touch on how the bill might shape future reforms in Alberta.
