Hard Hats, Hidden Indirect Tax
Presented by the CBA Alberta Taxation Law (South) Section
On Demand. Originally presented on May 7, 2026.
As Canada embarks on ambitious nation-building projects to drive economic growth and sustainable development, unprecedented levels of capital investment are expected to follow.
This presentation examines often overlooked indirect tax issues arising in large scale infrastructure projects. Drawing on recent federal project announcements and developments at the Major Project Office, it highlights how complex ownership and financing structures, Indigenous participation, multi-tier contracting arrangements, and the importation of specialized equipment can result in unrecoverable tax costs if not addressed at an early stage.
The Section meeting is designed to equip tax lawyers with practical issue spotting tools and strategic considerations to support project proponents, contractors, and advisors throughout the full lifecycle of major infrastructure projects.
