When the Border Runs Through the Estate: Cross-Border Issues

Presented by the CBA Alberta Wills & Trusts (South) Section

Cross-border exposure rarely announces itself at the intake meeting. A client mentions a daughter who was born in Seattle, a condo in Palm Desert, or a U.S. green card surrendered "years ago" — and a routine Alberta wills file quietly acquires U.S. estate tax, trust reporting, and compliance dimensions. Cooper Xu, a partner at MNP with a focus on cross-border issues and advising Canadian families with U.S. connections, will walk through the fact patterns that most often catch Alberta solicitors and estate administrators off guard, what the real consequences are, and when the file needs a cross-border advisor at the table.
