Jennifer K. Emmel speaks about the US social media addiction litigation. Jennifer represents individuals and families harmed by addiction to social media platforms, as well as school districts seeking compensation for costs incurred in addressing student mental health challenges tied to excessive social media use.
The first bellwether trial concluded in March 2026 in California. A jury found Meta and YouTube liable for negligence and failure to warn, awarding $3 million in compensatory damages and $3 million in punitive damages. Jennifer discusses the US litigation structure, trial experience, the future of social media mass tort claims, and how the US experience compares to cases brought in Canada.
