
The Honourable Palbinder Kaur Shergill
Justice Shergill was appointed to the SCBC in 2017. She has presided over hundreds of cases covering a wide variety of subject areas. She is Co-Chair of the New Federally Appointed Judges training program, and also volunteers her time to the CBA and other organizations on issues related to trial advocacy. Prior to her appointment, Justice Shergill practiced as a litigator for 26 years. She was appointed Queens Counsel in 2012.
Ret. Justice Paul Meyers
Paul Meyers is an accomplished legal professional with over 25 years of experience as a lawyer and 23 years as a Provincial Court Judge in British Columbia. Throughout his distinguished career, Paul has conducted hundreds of trials at every court level in BC, including numerous jury trials. Appointed as a Provincial Court Judge in 1999, Paul presided over thousands of criminal, youth, family, and civil trials. Over this period of time, he also mediated hundreds of settlement conferences.
Paul has attended many conferences and seminars where he expanded his knowledge and honed his skills as a trial judge and as a mediator. His expertise also extends to participating in panels and lecturing to judges, lawyers, law students, and high school students throughout his judicial career. He also served as the Editor of the Judges Civil Rules Book for two years.
After his notable career as a judge, Paul transitioned into mediation to help those seeking a knowledgeable and experienced professional to effectively guide them in resolving their differences.
Laura Bevan
Laura is an experienced commercial litigator specializing in complex litigation and dispute resolution. Laura handles a wide range of high-profile disputes, including public and private law matters. Laura has appeared before all levels of court in British Columbia and as counsel at the Supreme Court of Canada. Laura has also appeared before the British Columbia Securities Commission tribunal in administrative matters.
Laura's practice is marked by her clear communication, meticulous preparation, and strategic thinking. She is known for her ability to navigate the complexities of litigation while achieving efficient and favorable outcomes for her clients. Her deep understanding of dispute resolution methods, combined with her extensive courtroom experience, allows her to guide clients through challenging legal matters, whether through negotiation, mediation, or arbitration, or trial.
In addition to her practice, Laura is dedicated to community involvement and mentorship, fostering the development of the next generation of legal professionals. From 2017 to 2025, Laura was on the board of ShEvalesco, a non-profit organization providing life-skill programming to children, youth and emerging adults.
Ashley Syer
Ashley was called to the Bar in 2010. She started her own practice in 2014 and never looked back. She has represented clients in a variety of areas of law, at all levels of court in BC and in many administrative tribunals.
Ashley runs the Gastown Law Collective and started The Lawyer Incubator in 2022, offering support and mentorship to sole practitioners. She has been a mentor and a leader within the solo and small firm community, including as one of the original board members and current President of the Boutique Counsel Network.
After 16 years of litigating and 12 years as a mediator, Ashley has shifted her focus entirely to mediation and dispute resolution. She mediates all manner of civil disputes, workplace issues, and has a particular interest in estate mediation and employment-related matters. She also is a roster mediator for the BC Human Rights Tribunal, the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada, the WorksafeBC PAC mediation program, and the Law Society of BC’s fee dispute mediation program.
