Most people are aware of scams targeting individuals and organizations, particularly seniors. However, rapidly advancing technology and AI are making these schemes increasingly sophisticated. Anyone can be a target, but seniors may be particularly vulnerable due to factors such as isolation, health challenges, and unfamiliarity with rapidly evolving technology. Open communication, awareness, and education are essential to reducing that vulnerability
Linda Annis and former Executive Director of Metro Vancouver Crime Stoppers,
Daniel Reid, share their knowledge and insights on techniques such as deepfakes, vishing and phishing, amongst other types of scams that seniors are vulnerable to and how to avoid becoming a victim.
About the Speakers
Linda Annis has been a Surrey City Councillor or since 2018. She is a former Executive Director of Metro Vancouver Crime Stoppers and a dedicated volunteer in the community for decades. She is passionate about serving. She has served as a volunteer of a few community groups and non-for-profit organizations and has been honoured with several awards for her roles and dedication. Linda is a recognized public figure as she is often interviewed on TV about different topics of interest for the community. When Linda was the Executive Director of Crime Stoppers, she was interviewed on TV about different scams targeting seniors. Her knowledge of the subject was impressive, as well as her insights and her compassion.
Daniel Reid is an accomplished lawyer and Associate Counsel at Harper Grey LLP. He maintains a practice focused on defamation and privacy law, with a particular focus on online defamation and breaches of privacy. Daniel is very knowledgeable on legal/technological issues. He has published several articles related to the subject matter and has spoken frequently about the topic on local and national news.
This September, Daniel, together with a technology expert, delivered a Webinar with the CLE, related to Deepfakes which provided an overview of emerging threats from AI-generated deepfake audio/video, and they suggested practicalities and strategies to avoid the increasing risk of becoming a victim of this unscrupulous practice.
