SYNOPSIS
Small law firms in B.C. now have access to a range of AI tools, and using them well depends on an understanding of both the technology and the professional obligations that accompany it. An AI governance & risk professional examines practical applications of AI in two areas: firm operations and legal practice.
Consider what the tools can reasonably do, where they tend to fail, and how obligations of competence, confidentiality, supervision, and candour apply. This is not a product demonstration or a review of specific tools; attendees will leave with a clear framework for making sound decisions about AI in their own practice.

About Michael Litchfield
Michael is a lawyer, management consultant, and educator whose work focuses on AI risk and governance. A practising member of the Law Society of British Columbia since 2006, he is the Managing Director of Thinklab Consulting Inc., through which he has advised law firms on practice management and risk for many years and developed professional development programs for lawyers across the province. Outside of his professional practice, Michael is the Director of the Business Law Clinic and the AI Risk and Regulation Lab at the University of Victoria Faculty of Law and he recently founded the Canadian Centre for Responsible AI Governance, an independent national not-for-profit focused on AI governance. He writes regularly on AI governance for SLAW, Canada's online legal magazine.
