Due to the political climate in the US, many trans people are fleeing to go elsewhere for safety. Canada is one of the first choices for non-binary folk. The refugee pathway is one possibility, but there remain many legal challenges and the result is unknown at this time. Bill C3, the Act to Amend the Citizenship Act, came into effect in December 2025 and since then, many Americans have applied to claim Canadian citizenship due to having a Canadian ancestor. Spousal Sponsorships, CUSMA work permits, and LMIA remain other avenues for Americans to temporarily settle in Canada with hopes to a permanent pathway.
