Fair Dealing in the Age of Social Media: Memes, Reels, and Tunes (Recording)

Dec. 11, 2025
Fredericton Online

RECORDING

How are intellectual property rights, such as copyright, moral rights and personality rights, implicated when memes, reels and tunes are created, shared, reposted and/or re-tweeted? Does Canadian jurisprudence have anything to say about remixes, mash-ups and memeification? Is copying ok if it’s just for fun? This session will explore the intersection between copyright and fair dealing in the context of instantaneous content sharing and virality. The copyright regime purports to balance the rights of creators and users, but has it been able to keep up in the age of social media?
