Provincial Specialty Court
Mental Health Court and the Intimate Partner Violence Intervention Court (IPVIC)
Seminar Overview:
The Intimate Partner Violence Intervention Court (IPVIC) is a specialized criminal court using an intervention-based approach to address the complex issues of intimate partner violence. Currently IPVIC operates in St. John’s, Stephenville and Grand Falls-Windsor. In addition, there are screening courts in Gander (for Grand Falls-Windsor) and Corner Brook (for Stephenville). The focus is on victim safety as well as emphasizing offender accountability and treatment. This court is a collaborative effort of various stakeholders, including the Provincial Court of Newfoundland and Labrador, Public Prosecutions, Legal Aid NL, Victim Services, Corrections and Community Services, and the Department of Families and Affordability.
The Mental Health Court (MHC) is a specialized criminal court based on the recognition that certain offenders who suffer from an active mental disorder may commit offences they might not otherwise commit. Currently only offered in St John’s, health care professionals and corrections personnel provide medical and community-based supports to the individuals who are accepted into this Court. They provide effective treatment options crafted to reflect the needs of the offender and the community. This court is a collaborated effort of carious stakeholders including the Provincial Court of Newfoundland and Labrador, Public Prosecutions, Legal Aid NL, Corrections and Community Services, and Health NL.
This one-hour presentation provides members with an overview of both IPVIC and MHC, objectives and outcomes as well as highlighting the process to engage clients in the program. Several members of the team, including Judge Marshall will also be present and available to answer any questions.
