French Legal Terminology Training Series (Two-Part Program)

Oct. 30, 2026 - Feb. 5, 2027
Halifax NS

October 30, 2026 and February 5, 2027

Hosted in partnership with the Association des juristes d’expression française de la Nouvelle-Écosse (AJEFNÉ)

This two-part training series, delivered by the Centre canadien de français juridique (CCFJ), is designed to support Nova Scotia lawyers who speak French but want to strengthen their confidence and precision in French legal terminology.

Many lawyers have conversational French skills but feel underprepared to represent clients in French – particularly when it comes to courtroom language and practice-specific vocabulary. Through this initiative, participants will build practical language skills that enhance their ability to work in French legal settings. The program contributes to improving access to justice for francophone communities, ensuring Nova Scotians can engage with the legal system in their preferred language.

The series includes:

  • Two core sessions on General French Legal Terminology, and
  • Shorter, specialized sessions focused on Family Law and Criminal Law

Participants can register for the two General French Legal Terminology sessions as independent courses. However, we strongly encourage attending both for a more comprehensive learning experience.

The Family Law and Criminal Law sessions are included in the single-day rate as part of the full-day program alongside General French Legal Terminology.

Sessions will be held in person in Halifax (Delta Halifax - 1990 Barrington St) and Dartmouth (Delta Dartmouth - 240 Brownlow Ave), with a real time hybrid option for participants across the province. We strongly encourage in-person attendance. To support in-person participation, there is an registration option to include accommodations at the either Delta.

Funding for this initiative has been made possible through a grant from the Department of Justice Canada Access to Justice in Both Official Languages Support Fund.

This training is intended for francophone and bilingual lawyers who are comfortable holding a basic conversation in French and can understand and be understood in everyday exchanges. It is not an introductory French course, but rather a professional development opportunity focused on applied legal language skills.

The session on Friday, October 30 will be followed by a cinq à sept networking social, hosted in collaboration with AJEFNÉ
