Following a storied career as a leading litigator in private practice and in the public sector, Mr. Binnie was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada in 1998, where he served for nearly 14 years. Mr. Binnie was only the third modern Justice appointed directly from the bar.
During his time on the country’s top Court, Mr. Binnie authored more than 170 opinions, among them many landmark cases in the areas of copyright, defamation and media law, freedom of expression under the Charter, privacy, patent interpretation and trademark law.
