Safety in Long-Term Care: Making Sense of the Gillese Report and Government Response [WEBCAST ONLY]

Dec. 9, 2020
Toronto ON

OBA Elder Law PROGRAM | 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM (ET)

On July 31, 2019, Justice Gillese delivered her Report in the Public Inquiry into the Safety and Security of Residents in the Long-Term Care Homes System (the “Gillese Report”). The Public Inquiry was established in the aftermath of the murders and attempted murders perpetrated by Elizabeth Wettlaufer, which raised alarms about the safety of the long-term care system in Ontario. Justice Gillese’s first recommendation was that the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care issue a public report on the first anniversary of the release of the Gillese Report outlining the steps taken to implement the recommendations. In July 2020, the Government released this Report (the “Government Report”). In the intervening period, the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on those in Long-Term Care Homes reignited the concerns around the safety of residents and staff in these institutions.

Join us to unravel the recommendations from the Gillese Report of particular interest to the bar. Hear directly from Justice Gillese herself on the seminal elements of her report and the impact they may have on your practice. Our expert panel will share valuable insights on the steps being taken in response to the Gillese Report recommendations, and how they are intertwined with the current challenges facing long-term care in Ontario.
