Bill 197, the COVID-19 Economic Recovery Act, 2020, received Royal Assent on July 21st, 2020. This legislation made significant changes to the Environmental Assessment Act, providing the first major structural and conceptual reforms since the EAA was enacted in 1976. Bill 197 will change how government agencies, ministries, companies in particular sectors, municipalities, First Nations and environmentalists engage in environmental planning and monitoring of EA implementation and compliance in the years ahead, and the availability of judicial review.
