Anti-Racism Education for Legal Professionals

ON DEMAND
This webinar was originally presented on May 5, 2021

Presenters:
Niki Bains & Sylvie Vigneux, Anti-Racism Bookshelf

This 1.5-hour workshop aims to provide legal practitioners with a toolkit to identify, unpack and intervene in systemic racism within legal institutions and your own practice. Moving beyond a diversity and inclusion lens, this session encourages members of the legal community to develop an anti-racist framework. Participants will be introduced to key terms and concepts, guided through a case study, and encouraged to work through a scenario to unpack multiple layers of discrimination. The session will close with a discussion of anti-racist strategies you can employ in your personal and professional life.

Speaker Bios:

Niki Bains, BA (Hons), JD (she/her) attended law school at the University of Victoria. She returned home to complete a clerkship at the Provincial Court of Alberta. She now practices Aboriginal Law in Edmonton, serving First Nations primarily in the area of specific claims. Niki is interested in advancing racial justice through legal avenues and education.

Sylvie Vigneux, BA, MA, JD (she/her) comes from mixed Anishinaabe/French and Irish relatives and is working to rebuild connections with her Anishinaabe community that were damaged by gendered and racist colonial policies. She is an associate at an Edmonton-based firm practicing in the areas of labour, employment and human rights law. Sylvie also works with the Elizabeth Fry Society providing free legal advice to survivors of sexual violence.

Sylvie and Niki co-created the Anti-Racism Bookshelf, a resource list for the legal community. Together, they are developing a course called Critical Perspectives on Race and the Law, which will be offered through the University of Alberta Faculty of Law this fall.
