The high cost of legal representation puts it out of reach for many Canadians forcing them to represent themselves without a lawyer. And as lawyers know, the court system is not always easy to navigate, even for members of the profession.
Professor Julie Macfarlane, Project Director of the National Self-Represented Litigants Project and professor of law at the University of Windsor, is joined by members of the CBA Alberta Board of Directors to discuss the challenges that face self-represented litigants, how these challenges have been exacerbated by the pandemic, and what additional challenges are faced by diverse litigants. Professor Macfarlane will also share her insight on what lawyers can do individually, and how we can push for system change to better address the needs of self-represented litigants.
