Join colleagues from around Alberta at the 2022 CBA Alberta Annual General Meeting. Alberta Branch President, Bianca Kratt will update the membership on the activity of CBA Alberta over the past year and national President Stephen Rotstein will bring greetings to Alberta members on behalf of CBA national.
We are also pleased to welcome keynote speaker the Honourable Leonard S. (Tony) Mandamin, IPC, who will be sharing his presentation "Advancing Indigenous Justice: Stories from 40 years in Law". Mr. Mandamin is an Anishinaabe member of the Wiikwemikoong Unceded Indian Reserve on Manitoulin Island, Ontario. After completing his Bachelor of Laws at the University of Alberta Faculty of Law, and being called to the Alberta Bar in 1983, Mr. Mandamin established the law firm of Mandamin & Associates in 1985. During his years of practice, he appeared as counsel before the Court of Queen's Bench and Provincial Court in Alberta, the Supreme Court of Canada (R. v. Badger), Saskatchewan Court of Appeal (R. v. Wolfe) and the Indian Claims Commission (Cold Lake First Nations Primrose Claim). Mr. Mandamin was appointed to the Provincial Court of Alberta in 1999, where he presided in the Tsuu T’ina and Siksika Courts which involved traditional aboriginal mediation. He was later appointed to the Federal Court in 2007 where he chaired the Federal Court Aboriginal Law Liaison Committee.
Mr. Mandamin’s experience is drawn from various responsibilities held as lawyer and a jurist, in addition to his roles as a faculty coordinator for Aboriginal Justice Seminars at the Banff School of Management, Adjunct Professor at the University of Alberta School of Native Studies, Commissioner and Chairperson of the Edmonton Police Commission and President of the Canadian Native Friendship Centre in Edmonton. Mr. Mandamin retired from the Federal Court in 2019 and currently serves as Counsel with Witten LLP in Edmonton.
