THE CANADIAN BAR ASSOCIATION Alberta Branch
MENTOR PROGRAM - NORTH
"Mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen, and a push in the right direction"
- John Crosby
Mentoring continues to be one of the most effective ways to pass on skills, knowledge and wisdom, and train the next generation of professionals - you! That is why the Canadian Bar Association Alberta Branch welcomes you to participate in our 2018 Mentor Program. This program will run from January 2018 to December 2018.
Students are matched with lawyers who share a similar interest in particular areas of law. Mentors can provide critical career advice about becoming a lawyer and working within the profession. This is also an opportunity to build important networks within the legal community in which you are about to join. Program activities can include (but are not limited to): attending the "Mentor Mixer" in January; meeting at mentor's office, which can include an office tour; meetings over coffee and/or lunch; attending CBA Section meetings together (free to law students); phone calls and/or e-mails to ask questions or seek opinions; going to court/hearings, if possible. The program is what you and your mentor make of it!
Requirements: The program offers flexibility and can be tailored to suit your needs, but it is recommended that you seriously consider any time commitments/constraints you may have before applying. Please ensure you are able to commit to at least 2-3 in person meetings; as well be available for (and initiate) phone calls and/or e-mails. The success of a mentoring relationship depends upon the effort put forth by the mentor and mentee; so, we ask that you respectfully do not sign up for this program if you do not think you will follow up with your mentor. There is no doubt, being involved in a mentoring relationship requires an investment of time and effort; however, you'll likely discover this investment provides an enriching learning experience that will pay you generous dividends and hopefully form a relationship that will last throughout your legal career.
If you participated in the program last year but would like to experience a new mentor you are most welcome to apply again for this year's program.
Please note that this program is not for the purpose of finding a summer or articling position.
If you are an NCA student and wish to partake in this program please contact us at the CBA at 780-428-1230 or by email at edmonton2@cba-alberta.org.
Applications will be accepted until Thursday, December 7th, 2017. Matches will be made shortly thereafter.
**Note: You must be a current member of the Canadian Bar Association Law Student Section in order to participate in this program. Click here to join if you are not already a member.
