Synopsis
barbara findlay, QC, leads a whirlwind tour through queer and trans legal history from the days of criminalization through legalization, human rights and Charter cases, to arrive at topical issues: emerging family forms, current practice directives, conversion therapy and identity documents, and more. Catherine Wong will then delve further into emerging family law issues in multiparent and polyamorous families.
About barbara findlay, QC
barbara became a lawyer in 1977, attaining her law degree from UBC after completing a B.A. at Queens University in Kingston, Ontario, and an M.A. in sociology at U.B.C. She has a broad range of legal experience, practicing as a union-side labour lawyer; working for the Legal Services Society (legal aid) doing poverty law, and in policy-making capacities. She has been a member of the Faculty of Law at UBC and now runs a general practice. In her non-lawyer capacity, barbara has done political work and advocacy around issues of oppression, including sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia and disability.
As a member of AWARE (the Alliance of Women against Racism Etc.) and as a member of Across Our Differences, barbara has done hundreds of unlearning oppression workshops for groups ranging from workplaces to university classes to legal audiences. It is her conviction that, "unless we work as hard on the ways we are privileged - whether by white skin, by heterosexuality, by able- bodiedness, or by economic advantage – as we do on the ways we are oppressed, equality will never come."
About Catherine Wong
