We are holding two engagement sessions to hear your thoughts and learn from your experiences. We want to hear:
- Where does the federal framework create uncertainty?
- What problems have you or your clients encountered?
- What changes would better support the people and families who rely on assisted reproduction?
We are at the beginning of this conversation. Your practical examples, concerns and ideas will help us identify priorities for law reform and make the case for change to the federal government. Please share client experiences without identifying information.
Description of the issue
The federal Assisted Human Reproduction Act came into effect in 2004. The Consent Regulations have been in effect since 2007. The Reimbursement Regulations took effect in 2020.
Since the inception of the AHRA, family building through assisted reproduction has increased; technology has evolved; and there has been significant social change, resulting in lack of clarity and gaps in the law.
Practitioners have been working through questions that the legislation and regulations do not always answer clearly. The case law to date has resulted in piecemeal interpretations that have unintended consequences and often add to the confusion.
