Careers in Charity Law Panel Discussion

We are excited to host a moderated panel featuring members of the Section executive working in various facets of charity law. Learn about the career paths that led practitioners to the practice of charity and not-for-profit law, and the breadth of opportunities that exist – from large firms, sole practitioners, to in-house lawyers and more.  

Participants will get a chance to ask questions and meet practitioners from across the country. Further details on the panelists to come. 

Moderator

Kristina L. Roberts is a member of the Social Impact group at Miller Thomson. She provides general advice to charities, non-profits, and social enterprises, focusing on compliance with the Income Tax Act and CRA regulation, governance matters, and operational issues. Kristina provides specialized advice on: charitable purposes and activities, collaboration and intermediary arrangements, revenue generation, business activities, social finance, impact investing, granting activities, gift agreements, re-structuring, mergers, and wind-upsShe also assists with incorporations and charitable registration.Learn more.

Speakers 

Sarah Fitzpatrick, is a partner in the Social Impact Group at Miller Thomson LLP in Vancouver. She was named "Lawyer of the Year" for 2024 in charities/non-profit law, by Best Lawyers. Sarah counsels charities and not-for-profit clients on regulatory compliance, and gift planning. She also advises clients on corporate governance, including at the board and membership level. She assists clients with general corporate legal matters including major business contracts, transactions, and restructuring. Sarah is highly involved in the community. Learn more.

Florence Carey*; BA, LLB, TEP, ICD.D operates a solo law practice focused on charities and non-profits. Today, Florence provides solid legal advice to help organizations incorporate, create by-laws, and apply for charitable status.  She also helps her clients navigate Canada Revenue Agency regulation of charities and non-profits, including gift planning and fundraising rules, and provides advice regarding governance matters.  Florence has been recognized as a Best Lawyer in Canada, and is a past-chair of the Canadian Bar Association Charities and Not-for-Profit Law Section. Learn more.

C. Yvonne Chenier KC, MBA, is a lawyer working in the philanthropic and social enterprise sectors, acting as general legal counsel and advising on planning, organizational, regulatory and governance matters. Yvonne has served as a trustee, board member or founder of numerous organizations. She is co-founder and legal counsel to IntegralOrg, a charity dedicated to educating other charities and not-for-profit organizations on regulatory matters. Learn more.

Phil Milley, CIC.C, is the Director Legal and Compliance Canada at Mastercard Foundation in Toronto. Philip leads a diverse team of legal professionals and oversees the Foundation’s Canadian legal and compliance obligations. Philip regularly advises on complex charitable programming, including foreign activities involving international organizations. In 2023 Philip was recognized by the Association of Corporate Counsel as a “Top 10 30-Somethings” a global award recognizing his innovation, approach to challenges, well-rounded perspectives, contributions to the in-house community, and pro bono and volunteer work.
