A tribute to Fred Bartley, Gladue Courts, and the contribution of public sector lawyers

The session will honour the memory of Fred Bartley, a member of the Public Sector Lawyers Section Executive, who passed suddenly on September 27, 2020.  Fred Bartley was a proud member of the Serpent River First Nation and award-winning Anishinaabe Crown attorney.

Fred Bartley played an important role in the establishment of a Gladue Court in his community.  The session will explore the creation of the Gladue Court at Old City Hall in Toronto in 2001 and the Gladue Court model that followed. It will explore the role and importance the Gladue Courts play in upholding Gladue principles.

The speakers will also address ways in which public sector lawyers can play an important role in the betterment of their communities.
