The United Nations General Assembly adopted the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) in 2007. In Canada, the Declaration was given legal effect in 2021 through the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act.
Why is it important for legal professionals to understand UNDRIP’s purpose and background? Why does Indigenous participation in its development matter, and how does the chronology of UNDRIP in Canada help us understand the path to Bill C-15, the UNDRIP Act, and the UNDRIP Action Plan?
Join us on June 24 for an insightful session exploring how UNDRIP is influencing legal practice, reconciliation initiatives, and government decision-making today. This program will also highlight the CBA’s newly launched Truth and Reconciliation Legal Companion Guide, including its section on UNDRIP.
