Calgary AB

Al-Noor Nenshi Nathoo,Executive Director - Alberta Health Service Clinical Ethics Service,  confronts these difficult legal and ethical questions head-on, drawing on his background in biology, genetics and philosophy to help Alberta’s health care delivery facilities navigate this complicated issue. He will explore the competing perspectives on conscientious objection in the context of MAiD and lead a discussion on the values and rights underlying conscientious objection to involvement in MAiD procedures.

Topic:  "A Delicate Balance: Patients, Providers and MAID
As highlighted in the recent decision from the Ontario Court of Appeal in Christian Medical and Dental Society of Canada v College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, MAiD raises legal and ethical concerns for providers as well as patients. For some potential providers, involvement in MAiD is incompatible with their beliefs and convictions. There is ongoing debate about the appropriate balance between the right of patients to receive MAiD and the right of providers and the organizations for which they work not to participate in MAiD services based on conscientious objection.
