Richard Williams
Vice President Human Resources at Flair Airlines

"Navigating Through Turbulence in Workplace Investigations."
On January 1, 2021, Bill C-65 came into effect which places an enhanced level of responsibility on employers within the federal jurisdiction to ensure they have measures in place to protect employees from harassment and violence in the workplace.  One of the most significant changes was the expectation that employers develop and implement a standardized investigation process for complaints.  It is mandated that this process be made available to and understood by all employees, and that employees are protected from retribution for making complaints in good faith to their employer.  The requirements of bill c-65 deal mainly with claims related to violence and harassment in the workplace, however, an employer’s responsibilities extend well beyond this area.

Richard Williams is a Human Resources Leader with over 15 years of experience in managing workplace investigations through a variety of human resources and labour relations roles in companies such as EPCOR, Capital Power and ATCO.  Mr. Williams has an MBA from the University of Alberta, is designated as a Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR), and was awarded the CPHR Leader of the Year award for Alberta in 2017.

In this webinar, he will highlight many practical considerations for managing conflict and challenges in workplace investigations through the pre-investigation, investigation and post-investigation phases, including:

• What is a workplace investigation and when is one necessary?
• Workplace investigation – shield, sword or both?
• How can company culture and group norms impact reporting of incidents and workplace investigations?
• What are the roles of various individuals within the workplace investigation?
• What is the impact of biases and other behavior on conducting an effective workplace investigation?
• Why the workplace investigation interview is vital to the success of the investigation?
• Tips for the investigation interview.
• What to expect when emotions take over?
• Concluding the investigation – where to go from here?
