Judicial Dispute Resolution: New Roles for Judges in Ensuring Justice

On Demand. Originally present on September 6, 2023.

The Honourable Justice William Tilleman (ret’d) will be discussing his new book, “Judicial Dispute Resolution: New Roles for Judges in Ensuring Justice”, co-authored by Dr. Lawrence Susskind of MIT, and Dr. Nicolas Parra-Herrra of Harvard, published on May 16, 2023. The book describes the ways in which judges, using judicial dispute resolution, have been facilitating problem-solving among litigants, and in the process ensuring more just outcomes. While little has been written about JDRs because they remain confidential, Tilleman J., Susskind, and Parra-Herrera were given exclusive access to the records and parties (including the JDR judges) in nine illustrative cases. The authors describe how JDR has worked for several decades in Canada, using the nine cases as case studies, and provide a Teaching Appendix summarizing those cases from the standpoint of multiple legal specialites.

SPEAKER

The Honourable Justice William Tilleman (retired)
