Evidence in Family Law Matters

Presented by the CBA Alberta Child & Youth Law (South) Section

Family law is often perceived as an area of legal practice where traditional evidentiary rules are relaxed or even disregarded. But is that really the case?

Join The Honourable Justice M.J. Shaften and moderator Jonathan P. Tieman for a compelling and clarifying discussion that challenges one of the most persistent misconceptions in legal practice: the idea that “there are no rules of evidence in family law.”

This session will dismantle that myth and explore how evidentiary principles—though sometimes applied with flexibility—remain the foundation for fairness, due process, and judicial integrity in family law proceedings.

The Honourable Justice M.J. Shaften
