Planning for Disabled Beneficiaries: AISH, RDSPs, DTC and Other Supports
Presented by the CBA Alberta Elder Law South Section
As more seniors live with disabilities or care for aging spouses and peers, understanding the financial and legal tools available becomes increasingly important. This session focuses on how elder law practitioners can effectively support older adults in navigating government programs and disability-related planning.
What You’ll Learn:
- AISH, When It Applies—and When It Doesn’t. A brief overview of Alberta’s AISH program and its limitations for clients approaching or over age 65.
- Disability Tax Credit (DTC): A Key to Unlocking Support. Learn how the DTC opens access to a range of benefits, and why it remains relevant well into retirement.
- RDSPs and Older Beneficiaries: Understand how RDSPs can still play a role later in life — and the legal considerations involved.
- Beyond the Basics: Legal Planning Strategies. Tools such as trusts, capacity planning, and coordinating with health and income supports.
- Case Studies and Practical Insights: Real-world examples focusing on seniors with disabilities and the role of legal advisors.
