Emily Varga
Emily Varga is a co-founding partner of VML Family law and has been practicing family law for the majority of her legal career. Emily attended law school at University of Calgary and while there she volunteered with Student Legal Assistance and was awarded the 2014 Grant McGibbon Prize. Prior to attending law school, Emily graduated from McMaster University with an Honours Bachelor of Arts, has worked in the book publishing industry in Toronto, and in Aberdeen, Scotland writing government policy.
She is an active member of the Canadian Bar Association and volunteer for the CBA on the Inns of Court Committee connecting junior lawyers to the Judiciary. Emily was a two-time chair of the Alberta Law Day Committee with the CBA and is passionate about community involvement, having volunteered with the CBA, the University of Calgary Faculty of Law, the Children’s Legal and Education Research Centre and various volunteer Boards in Calgary.
In her free time, Emily is an author and writes young adult fantasy novels and was recently shortlisted for the Waterstones Book Prize. Emily enjoys spending time with her family and enjoys traveling all over the world.
Casey McQueen
Casey McQueen is an associate with HMC Lawyers LLP, and practices family law exclusively. Casey’s practice focuses on finding efficient and cost-effective solutions for clients, which includes alternative dispute resolution and litigation practices. She also offers services as a Mediator. Casey has a particular interest in parenting and enjoys working on high conflict parenting matters to help clients find practical, long-term solutions based on their unique circumstances.
Casey completed her Bachelor of Arts at the University of Calgary and her Juris Doctor at Thompson Rivers University. She was called to the bar in 2018. Prior to attending law school, Casey worked for one of Calgary’s largest law firms for six years, where she developed a wide array of skills specializing in research and document management.
Casey was recently recognized in Best Lawyers: Canada as “Ones to Watch” for 2025, and volunteers as a Supervising Lawyer with Pro Bono Students Canada - Calgary Chapter to assist with their projects for Mamas for Mamas (Calgary Branch). Casey, along with the rest of the Family Team at HMC Lawyers, organized HMC Lawyers’ first annual Stupid Cupid Family Law Social, as she recognizes the importance of collegiality with other members of the Family Bar.
During her spare time, Casey enjoys running, indoor cycling, hot yoga and spending time with family and friends. She has two young daughters who keep her busy when she’s not in the office!
