Exploring the Intersection of Family Law and Immigration

Presented by the CBA Alberta Immigration Law South Section

We invite you to join Sanjiv Parmar, K.C.—a seasoned family and child custody lawyer and designated mediator—for a valuable discussion on the legal intersections between family law and immigration. This session will offer critical insights into how family law proceedings, such as divorce or separation, can impact immigration applications, including spousal sponsorships and other permanent or temporary resident pathways.

Topics covered will include:

  • Family law and divorce
  • Criminal law considerations
  • Domestic violence
  • Protection orders
  • The Family Court Process
  • Mediation
  • Immigration implications of family breakdowns

Mr. Parmar was called to the Alberta Bar in 2011 and is also a former Bencher with the Law Society of Alberta. Following roles in private practice and as Crown Counsel with Alberta Justice, he founded Parmar Law in 2016. He brings extensive experience across several areas including family law, child welfare and representation, criminal law, domestic violence, immigration and refugee claims, and other areas. He holds multiple mediation designations and sits on mediation rosters. Learn more at: https://www.parmarlaw.ca
