Alberta Data Centres: Legal and Regulatory Landscape
Presented by the CBA Alberta Natural Resources (South) Section
As Alberta emerges as a key jurisdiction for data centre development, developers must navigate a complex matrix of policy and regulatory considerations. This presentation will explore the legal landscape surrounding data centre projects with a focus on obtaining power, land use, and permitting. A key topic of discussion will be the regulatory implications of data centres self-supplying their own power – a model of increasing interest driven by Alberta's "bring your own power" approach and recently announced levy for grid-connected data centres. Presenters will offer observations from recent experience and practical guidance in this rapidly evolving sector.
An additional fireside chat with Dan Chapman of Augur VC, moderated by Jessica Kennedy, will provide a focused discussion on the development, financing, and operation of modern data centres. Dan will share his expertise on key topics, including: the structure and operational requirements of data centres; site selection considerations, including power, water, and connectivity needs; Alberta’s position relative to other jurisdictions seeking data centre investments; and challenges related to power demand and regulatory uncertainty.
This session will offer valuable insights into the legal, regulatory, and commercial aspects of data centre projects in Alberta.
