SYNOPSIS
Counsel have both a moral and ethical duty to display good manners and professional decorum towards fellow lawyers, litigants and the court. Now more than ever, with the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, it is important lawyers do not lose sight of treating adversaries with respect and compassion. As an unprecedented shift in our legal system has pushed more of our work online, there is an increasing need, expectation, and emphasis on civility in our legal practice during these stressful and unfamiliar times.
The tension between being civil and being a forceful advocate is one more stress added to our already stressful profession . The pandemic has impacted all aspects of the legal profession and, in some instances, has forced courts, lawyers, and clients to adjust expectations. Through it all, the duty to maintain our civility and professionalism remains paramount.
In this recording, speakers discuss:
- Civility in the Legal Profession – how has the meaning of this evolved and transformed during COVID
- Dealing with the fatigue of working remotely while maintaining composure
- Communicating with opposing counsel remotely
- Dealing with the altered way the justice system operates
