ONLINE MEETING: BC’s New Arbitration Act and Changes at VanIAC

Synopsis

Join us to hear from this terrific panel of experienced counsel on the changes to practices and procedures under the new Arbitration Act, as well as recent updates at the Vancouver International Arbitration Centre (VanIAC). This presentation will also include discussion and advice for drafting effective and enforceable arbitration clauses.

Speaker Biographies

Tracey Cohen, QC is a leading commercial litigation and dispute resolution Partner in Fasken’s Vancouver office. Tracey has been recognized for expertise in Corporate and Commercial Litigation, Securities Litigation and International and Commercial Arbitration and has repeatedly been recognized as one of Canada’s top 25 female litigators.  Tracey was appointed as Queen’s Counsel in 2015 and was admitted as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers in March 2019, and a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America in 2020. Tracey is currently a member of the Fasken’s Partnership Board.  She is also Co-Chair of Fasken’s Commercial Litigation Group in BC and Chair of Fasken’s National Arbitration Steering Committee.  She is a regular presenter at CLEs and teaches the cross-examination session for UBC Trial Advocacy.

Alexandra Mitretodis is a dispute resolution lawyer at Fasken in Vancouver with a practice in both domestic and international commercial arbitration, commercial litigation, as well as class action defence.  Alexandra is named as a "Future Leader" by Who's Who Legal Arbitration, a "Rising Star" in dispute resolution by Legal 500 and “One to Watch” in commercial litigation by Best Lawyers in Canada. Alexandra is a Director of the Vancouver International Arbitration Center and is also an Adjunct Professor at the Peter A. Allard School of Law at The University of British Columbia. She is the past president of the Young Canadian Arbitration Practitioners and a former ICC Young Arbitrator Forum representative for Canada.

Dierk Ullrich is a corporate Partner in Vancouver, where he assists privately-held businesses, not-for-profit entities, financial and educational institutions on  mergers and acquisitions, financings, and general commercial matters. Dierk uses his in-depth experience to also advise clients on regulatory and compliance matters regarding consumer protection, financial services and payday loans, mortgage brokerage, and liquor licensing. With considerable expertise in the new BC Societies Act and the Canadian not-for-profit legislation, Dierk also regularly advises societies, charities and not-for-profits in Canada on a variety of governance and compliance matters .He also assists foreign businesses with their operations and distribution networks in Canada. Prior to practicing corporate and business law, Dierk was a member our Vancouver litigation team focusing on international arbitration and representing telecommunications, transportation, technology and education sector clients on matters relating to competition law, real estate, business practices, administrative and constitutional law.
