ONLINE MEETING: Indigenous Child Welfare and Bill C-92 at the Supreme Court of Canada

Synopsis

Dr. Hadley Friedland, Heather Cochran, and Kate Gunn discuss about the recent Supreme Court proceedings on the challenge to Bill C-92, An Act respecting First Nations, Inuit and Métis children, youth and families, and potential impacts of those proceedings and Bill C-92 on child welfare in BC. 
 

About the Speakers

Dr. Hadley Friedland is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law. Her research focuses on Indigenous law, Aboriginal law, Family law and Child Welfare law, Criminal Justice, Therapeutic jurisprudence and Community-led research. Dr. Friedland is author of the book, The Wetiko (Windigo) Legal Principles: Cree and Anishinabek Responses to Violence and Victimization, and is the Academic Director and Co-founder of the Wahkohtowin Law and Governance Lodge, a dedicated research initiative developed to uphold Indigenous law through supporting community-led research. 

Heather Cochran is legal counsel with the British Columbia Ministry of Attorney General, where she specializes in Aboriginal law and focuses on advising on the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and supporting negotiations. Prior to joining the Ministry of Attorney General, she clerked at the Supreme Court of Canada and practiced at a leading Vancouver litigation boutique. Heather has appeared at all levels of court and was co-counsel for the Attorney General of British Columbia on the reference to the Supreme Court of Canada respecting Bill C-92.

Kate Gunn is a partner at First Peoples Law LLP. She represents First Nations and Indigenous groups across Canada on issues related to the protection and advancement of their inherent and constitutionally protected title, rights and Treaty rights. Kate is an adjunct professor and holds an LLM from the University of British Columbia, where her research focused on the interpretation of treaties between Indigenous Peoples and the Crown.
