SYNOPSIS
This webinar is a part 2 of the CBABC Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Series.
There has been much discussion in the legal market regarding unconscious bias. A vast body of research shows unconscious racism, ageism, sexism, homophobia, amongst others play a big role in who legal employers hire, retain, and advance
Unconscious bias can be detrimental to growing a diverse and innovative workforce. If everyone is the same, everyone will have the same ideas and come to the same conclusions. And that’s not how great businesses are built.
When we know better, we do better. In this session, we covered unconscious bias in the workplace – what it is, when it happens, and what strategies can be used to challenge the behaviour.

About Miriam Leung
Miriam provides critical advice to lawyers at all levels, from newly qualified associates embarking on their legal career through to partners and general counsels considering potential next steps. Miriam has deep insight into current hiring trends for the in-house and private practice legal market and understands the challenges lawyers and law firms face. Her expertise is sought out, and she speaks regularly on all aspects of legal career management, including compensation, goal setting, and networking.
Miriam was previously a Director at a leading executive search firm in Hong Kong. For over nine years, Miriam worked extensively with key decision makers, including partners and HR professionals, to build strong legal teams and increase practice depth. Miriam leverages her extensive international recruitment experience to get high quality results efficiently.
Miriam holds a B.A.&Sc. from the University of Toronto and an LL.B. from Manchester Metropolitan University. She is fluent in Cantonese and Mandarin.
About Shetin Adams
Shetin is a Project Coordinator for The Counsel Network, based in our Calgary office. She plays a critical role in managing the information between recruiters, candidates, and clients, and ensuring a smooth and efficient experience is had by all who interact with our team. Shetin acts as one of the primary contacts on all inter-office matters and ensures the national team has the best practices in place to facilitate the recruitment management process.
Shetin has recently completed a B.A. in International Relations at The University of Calgary where she was the recipient of numerous awards for academic achievement. Shetin is passionate about working with marginalized communities and has volunteered with local organizations such as the ESL Reading Club and Deaf & Hear Alberta, as well as abroad. Shetin also wrote a play for 2018 YOUth Riot and filmed a documentary short for Black History Month.
About Synthia Kloot
As our Chief Operating Officer, Synthia works closely with our executive committee and partnership to deliver on both the firm’s short and long-term strategic plans across the team. She is a highly trusted leader charged with grounding the firm’s day-to-day decisions in our core values and optimizing organizational processes to ensure efficiency.
Before joining Clark Wilson in 2021, Synthia worked in a wide variety of industries, including real estate, banking, distribution and logistics, financial audit and controls, as well as IT consulting. Drawing from her diverse portfolio, and utilizing the experience paired with the many skills she’s honed throughout her career, Synthia brings a fresh perspective to the firm on new ways to add value and grow the organization.
Over her career, Synthia has been recognized as one of Canada’s Best Executives in 2021 by Globe & Mail’s Report on Business magazine and received the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade’s Wendy McDonald Diversity Champion Award in 2020.
